VILLANOVA BLASTS BUCKNELL

BY ROCK HOFFMAN

COLLEGE FOOTBALL EDITOR

Villanova – For the second week in a row the Villanova Wildcats dominated a Patriot League team, as they beat down the Bucknell Bison 55-3 in their home opener Saturday night on Goodreau Field at Villanova Stadium. Consider in the first half alone, the Wildcats (2-0) scored 45 points, had 240 yards total offense and their quarterback was on the bench midway through the second quarter. The Bison (0-2) managed just four first downs which is one more than the number of total yards they had. Three of those first downs came on penalties against the Wildcats which was perhaps their lone negative for the game.

For the second straight game, Wildcats cornerback Christian Benford had a pair of interceptions, one led to Villanova’s first touchdown (a one-yard run by Daniel Smith) the other was Benford’s first career touchdown as he returned it 19 yards to put Villanova up 38-0 at the time.

In a quarter-and-a-half action, in addition to his touchdown on the ground, Smith completed six of his nine passes – three of them went for scores, to three different receivers. Rayjoun Pringle was the only ‘Cat to reach pay dirt twice, his second touchdown catch of the night came on a 49-yard pass from backup quarterback Connor Watkins.

Next – the Wildcats host Richmond as they open CAA play. The Bison host Penn in the season opener for the Quakers.
